Rona's decision to consolidate its Portage-area operations at the former Wal-Mart outlet in the Portage Mall is generating positive reaction in the community.

RM of Portage Reeve Toby Trimble feels this is a very important economic development that should relieve some uncertainty among mall tenants about its future.

He thinks the RM will enjoy economic benefits from Rona's decision as well, because it shows a major company has confidence in the area. He's also pleased 30 to 40 extra jobs will be created.

Meanwhile, Portage Chamber President Shawn Cabak expects enhanced home improvement shopping opportunities for the region. He's also glad the void at the mall has been filled.
