A community group that comes together to clear and maintain skating surfaces on Crescent Lake is asking Portage and the area for help in providing equipment to make Skating on the Crescent possible this winter.

Christine Verwey, a member of the Committee for Skating on the Crescent, explains that usually, the group would have the ice ready by the second week of December, but that might not be possible without the right type of equipment.

"We rely heavily and only on volunteers. So, what we've been doing is having people come out with their side-by-sides that have a blade or a small skid steer with a blade or a snow blower or a broom attachment, and then they come and help us clear the surface, so we've got it ready for skaters."

Verwey says the idea is to have the ice ready for Christmas break and run the program until the first week of March.

"It's just a wonderful involvement by everybody, and it's gone over really well in the past, so I hope we see the same thing this year."

The idea started in 2017 but has had some bumps along the way with COVID since then.

If you have any equipment that you are willing to lend out to this Initiative, contact the Skating on the Crescent group on Facebook.
