Looking back at the 2021 year for Manitoba high schools, it started a lot different than it ended.

Marc Gaudet is the athletic director for MacGregor Collegiate Institute and says the year started out very slowly for their various sports teams.

"As you know, January to March/April, we had nothing here and then we were allowed to do some practicing," says Gaudet. "So, in May/June, we had some volleyball practices, just open to anybody that wanted to, which came out probably 8 to 10 times."

He says they held some outdoor baseball practices at the time.

Later in the year, things picked up considerably. Gaudet says they were quite busy.

"We still had cross country and soccer teams and then our volleyball teams did quite well," says Gaudet. "Our (junior varsity) boys volleyball team won the zones and finished fourth at provincials. The varsity boys were ranked in the top ten of AA for most of the year and we got to host provincials. So, that was a big endeavor and a huge positive accomplishment for our school. We had so many volunteers that stepped up. From all accounts, all the teams had a really great experience."

The junior varsity girls hosted a five-team provincials at the beginning of November, finishing fourth.
