Dr. Denis Fortier is advising expectant mothers to keep ultrasounds at a minimum.

The regional chief of staff for the Central Regional Health Authority feels a recent study will increase the potential of safety concerns regarding ultrasounds.

Conducted on mice, it suggests ultrasounds can affect the development of the fetal brain.

While the study certainly didn't use humans as test subjects, Denis Fortier believes it holds enough reason to continue testing.  But he stresses ultrasounds shouldn't be ruled out until human effects are confirmed, saying lives have been saved because of the scans.

Fortier says he'll still encourage the use of necessary ultrasounds, as it's a critical diagnostic tool.
