The two Manitoban's on Canada’s roster at the 2007 World Junior Hockey Championship in Sweden played huge roles yesterday in a win over the United States.

Winnipeg's Jonathon Toews and Darren Helm of St.Andrews each scored twice as Canada improved to 2 and 0 with a 6-3 victory over the Americans. Steve Downie and Tom Pyatt also scored for the Canadians who will meet Germany on Friday. The German’s doubled up on Slovakia 4-2 and Switzerland beat Belarus 4-1.

 

Winnipeg speedskater Cindy Klassen is the winner of the Bobbie Rosenfeld Award as Canada's Female Athlete of the Year. Klassen won five medals at the Winter Games to become Canada's most decorated Olympian. She took 131 of 144 first-place ballots in a survey of broadcasters and editors by Broadcast News and The Canadian Press. Klassen finished with 412 points, well ahead of speedskating teammate Clara Hughes of Winnipeg, who was second with 104 points. Hockey player Hayley Wickenheiser of Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, was third with 83 points. Klassen also set two world records last year, won the overall title at the world all-round championships and captured the World Cup three-thousand-metre title. She's the first repeat winner of the award since speedskater Catriona Le May Doan won in 2001 and 2002. Phoenix Suns guard Steve Nash won the Lionel Conacher award as Canada's Male Athlete of the Year.

Jamie Wright scored a pair of goals as Canada improved to 2 and 0 at the Spengler Cup Hockey Tournament in Davos, Switzerland downing the host team 6-3. Stacy Roest, Krys Kolanos, Chris Herperger and McCreary's Kirby Law also scored for Canada.
