Two people are facing many charges after police responded to a report of a break and enter at home on 60 Road North in the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie on Wednesday morning.

Just after midnight, Portage RCMP were on scene. The homeowners informed police they woke up and could smell something burning. It was at this time they realized someone had broken into their home, taken some items, and had turned on their stove elements. Their vehicle had also been stolen.

While police were investigating, another report came in of a single-vehicle collision on Highway 1, three kilometres east of Elie. First responders were on scene attempting to treat the two men in the vehicle, but they were reportedly "agitated and uncooperative". Headingley RCMP confirmed the vehicle was the same stolen vehicle from the RM of Portage and discovered some stolen items from the home.

The driver, a 20-year-old male from the RM of Portage was identified and found to have several outstanding warrants. Sydney Moose was taken to hospital where he was treated and released. He has since been charged with Break and Enter, Theft of Motor Vehicle, Theft, Arson-Endanger Life, Arson- Damage to Property, Mischief, Trespass by Night, Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose and Failing to Comply x2.

The passenger, a 17-year-old male from Long Plain First Nation, was not injured. He was transported to the Portage RCMP detachment where he was charged with Break and Enter, Theft of Motor Vehicle, Theft, Arson-Endanger Life, Arson- Damage to Property, Mischief, Trespass by Night and Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose.

Both were remanded into custody. RCMP continue to investigate.
