Volunteer support has been incredible at the Manitoba Swimming Ability Program for children with special needs at Splash Island in Portage la Prairie.

It's the first year the program has been offered inside of Portage La Prairie and Swim Ability Director Cari Smith says they've got 13 swimmers taking part and an incredible 20 volunteers helping out every Tuesday evening.

"It's really been going great this year," says Smith. "It's a lot of fun and really enjoyable for all the kids taking part. 13 kids is a great response and we're hoping in the future that it will be able to grow into a summer and winter program, and hopefully, more kids sign up as it goes along."

The program is already running in Brandon, Steinbach and Winnipeg, and Portage la Prairie. The group works on their swimming lessons, water safety, and even one-on-one training as well. It runs every Tuesday from 6-7 p.m.
