The province's Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health cautions West Nile virus can still strike. Mosquito counts are low, but Dr. Susan Roberecki points out their numbers are starting to rise.

The Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health is warning us not to be caught off guard.

Dr. Susan Roberecki says we should still protect ourselves against West Nile virus, even though mosquito populations are down this summer.

She notes there's an increasing percentage of culex tarsalis mosquitoes, which carry West Nile. It's expected that percentage will rise for the rest of the summer.

Thirteen communities in southern Manitoba have tested positive for the presence of West Nile virus.
The town of Niverville is one of the latest to make the list.

However, there has yet to be a human case of the virus this year.
