Sportsman's Corner in Westbourne will once again be holding their fishing derby this weekend, and it's open to everybody.

Howard Larkin, one of the owners of the campground, says last year's derby, like many events and competitions, had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He explains despite initial reluctance, they're excited to bring the event back.

"We'll have our silent auction, and I'm hoping it will all be good," notes Larkin. "People will social distance, our store is going back into full mask wearing but that's just the way of the times right now."

He adds the money from the derby will be going to the Children's Wish Foundation of Canada, a charity that lets kids with critical illnesses do anything they want, from swimming with dolphins to being able to experience a race in a real racecar. He goes into detail on why they support them specifically.

"The Children's Wish Foundation has been our charity here since we took over in 2009 and before that, the people here also worked with them and we basically kept going," says Larkin. "It's near and dear to our hearts, and I can tell you that everybody here is is very excited about it."

He explains this year they'll have different age ranges, from 12-and-under, 13-15, and 16-and-upwards. The participants will be competing in three categories, those being walleye, northern pike, and perch.

Larkin says they don't have a deadline for signing up, and will usually be handling registrations during the event.

"The majority of them come on Friday, and then they still come right through the tournament. Usually on Saturday, we'll be busy filling out registrations," notes Larkin. "Sometimes even on Sunday, some people come in and they give their money, they register and they don't even fish. They just do it to contribute to the cause."
