The community of Oakville can hardly wait with only three more sleeps left until the highly anticipated Jets Town Takeover.

This year's installment of the annual event, which allows the National Hockey League organization to head out to smaller communities in the province, will see alumni Derek Meech, Eric Fehr and the world-famous Mickey Moose go to Oakville to help take over the town.

Greg Burnett, a Teacher at Oakville School, has been a season ticket holder since the day the Jets returned to Winnipeg in 2011 and says he is thrilled to share his love for the Jets with the whole community.

"The greatest story one can have is sharing that passion I have for the Jets and trying to give it to others, and this is a perfect opportunity to do that. I'm really looking forward to it," he notes.

The Takeover will take place over two days next week. Monday will see minor and rec hockey players work with the Jets through multiple ice times.

While Tuesday morning will include an opportunity for those who don't play the sport to participate, as the True North Foundation will carry students at Oakville School through a mental health presentation, Tuesday evening will wrap the event at the community's arena for a viewing party of the Winnipeg Jets vs Minnesota Wild.

Ashley Tully, also a Teacher at Oakville School and the individual responsible for applying for the Takeover, explains that the community put their hat in the race almost as a joke thinking a small town like theirs could never win.

"We're excited to celebrate the idea of our community. I'll be honest; I'm not huge into the hockey scene. I was telling my students that this is about celebrating our small town and all of us coming together to do something so big that we didn't think we could do."

Doors will open to the viewing party at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, and the town welcomes the general public from communities close by as they know many of them helped vote for Oakville to get the Takeover.
