News from the Herman Prior Centre

May - July 2017

Herman Prior Centre is a Senior Services 55+ Centre, and we invite and encourage younger people and non-members to participate in our activities. Membership is $25, and members enjoy reduced prices for some special events. Members and non-members pay $1 and $2 respectively for each activity in which they participate at the Prior Centre.

Our doors are open from 8:30 - 4:30, Monday to Friday. Please drop in and see what we're all about! Ask for a list of programs and activities that are available. For information on any event or activity, you can contact Hope Faschoway, Executive Director, at (204) 857-6951 or [email protected].

Victoria Day – May 22 – HPC is CLOSED

Community Volunteer Income Tax Program is now completed

Our volunteer completed a total of 203 income tax returns for 2016! THANK YOU to the dedicated Volunteer whom prepared all those tax returns!

Congregate Noon Meal – 12:15 each weekday

The Herman Prior Centre offers a full cooked meal at 12:15 every weekday. Meals are complete with beverage and dessert, all for $8.00. Take out meals are also available for $9.00 each. Everyone – of all ages – are welcome to attend, just remember to call 857-6951 before 11:00 to reserve your meal. The monthly Menu is printed at the back of the HPC Newsletter, or you can call the Centre at 857-6951 to see what’s cooking!

Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre – Has wrapped up for another year!
The Prior Centre attends 6 matinee shows a year. The shows run from October through April. Participants are picked up by bus in Portage la Prairie (at Prior Centre) and Headingly. They attend the matinee performance then the bus takes them to the Polo Park mall for shopping and/or supper. At 7:00 p.m. they board the bus for home. Book Club – meets the 4th Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m.

Cribbage Tournament and Pot Luck – May 23, 2017 at 1:30 p.m.

Partners are required and don’t forget to bring a food item for the Pot Luck Dinner.

Friday, May 26 - May Birthday Party and Dance

Dance is free and starts at 1:30 pm. Cake and Ice Cream will be available for $2.00 per person.

If you are a member and your birthday is in May, then your cake & ice cream are FREE!

Herman Prior Centre ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING – Sunday, May 28th from 2 – 4 p.m.

Refreshments will be served. All members are invited and encouraged to attend and participate. Call Hope at 857-6951 to register.

A Day at the FORKS – Saturday, June 3rd

$30 for members and $40 for non-members. The bus leaves Herman Prior Centre at 9:30 a.m. and returns about 5:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to join us for a day out. We will be heading to the Forks in Winnipeg for a day of shopping and/or music. The music will be found at the Annual Band Festival located at The Canopy in the Forks from 12 – 4 p.m. It is sure to be a great day out with friends! Lunch is on your own and there are lots of shops and restaurants to browse and enjoy!

Austin’s Senior Day – Tuesday, June 6th.

Would you like to attend the Seniors Day at the Museum? There will be a bus picking up people in Portage and MacGregor. Trip includes bus fare and complimentary coffee and doughnut upon arrival, regular and wheelchair shuttle service, cold plate lunch, entertainment, tour through the Homesteaders Village, Hands-On displays, Old-Tyme Threshing demonstration, afternoon coffee and cinnamon bun!

Call Hope to register (857-6951) as there are only 47 seats available between Portage and MacGregor!

Cirque du Soleil: Kurios – Friday, June 23rd

$115 for members, $125 for non-members. The bus leaves Herman Prior Centre at 6:00 p.m. and returns about 11:45 p.m. NOTE: the bus is full, but anyone else interested can phone Hope at 204-857-6951 to be put on a stand-by list.

Fundraiser BBQ & Pie Sale – Friday, July 14th

We’re looking for donations of HOME MADE pies for our Pie sale. If you are interested in donating a Pie(s) for the sale, or if you don’t bake and would still like to contribute, a donation of $10 would help alleviate costs to make pies. Please contact Debbie at 857-6951 as soon as possible and let her know what kind of pie(s) you will be donating. THANK YOU!

Assiniboine Zoo – Thursday, July 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

$55 for members and $65 for non-members. The bus leaves Herman Prior Centre at 9:30 and returns about 4:00 p.m. This trip includes admission to the Assiniboine Park Zoo and bus fare. Upon arrival at the Zoo, participants will have time to explore the different exhibits and view the animals, including the new Journey to Churchill exhibit. There is a Domo Shuttle that goes throughout the zoo free of charge! Make sure to pack a lunch or you can purchase lunch from the restaurant located inside the Zoo.

Deadline to register is Friday, June 30th.

Rainbow Stage – “Mamma Mia” – Wednesday, August 30th from 6:00 p.m. to 11:45 p.m.

$85 for members and $95 for non-members. The bus leaves Herman Prior Centre at 6 p.m. and returns at 11:45 p.m. Mamma Mia – A mother. A daughter. Three possible dads. And a trip down the aisle you’ll never forget. Writer, Catherine Johnson’s sunny and funny tale with the story-telling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs propel this enchanting tale of love, laughter and friendship, creating an unforgettable show.

Deadline to register for this trip is Monday, July 17th.

REGULAR ACTIVITIES AT THE PRIOR CENTRE

Prior Centre Book Nook - open 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday - Friday. Books are $1 - $2, jigsaw puzzles are $1 - $10. Donations of books are always appreciated.

Scrabble - Join us for a game of Scrabble played every Monday at 10 a.m. - New players are always welcome.

HPC Medical Equipment Loan Service - We have donated wheelchairs, walkers, and other medical equipment available to rent. Call (204) 857-6951 for information.

Podiatrist Dr. Bellmont comes from Brandon to client appointments on June 6th at the Prior Centre. Call 1-877-909-3338 to book an appointment.

Beltone Hearing will be coming to the Prior Centre on Monday, May 8th and Monday, May 29th. Call the Prior Centre at (204) 857-6951 to book an appointment.

Foot Care Nurse, Sylvia Gauthier is at the Prior Centre every Thursday and Friday. Call Sylvia at 204-857-9035 to book your appointment.
