A local lacrosse player will be playing with Manitoba's top team in one of Canada's top leagues.

Garon Blanchard of Portage la Prairie recently tried out for, and made the Jr. B Manitoba Blizzard Box Lacrosse team. They play in the east division of the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League, and will play teams out of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

"We just had our first couple of practices there the other day. We're looking pretty good this year actually," says Blanchard. "I think we'll put up a decent fight during the season and hopefully come away with a few wins."

Blanchard has been playing the sport since he was 8, and says of all the different types of lacrosse out there, Box Lacrosse is his favourite. He hopes to play it for a while longer.

"My greatest hope right now is I hope I can at least, scholarship-wise, go and play lacrosse down in the United States or over in Ontario while studying for school," says Blanchard.

He plans to become a coroner or to work with forensics.

Blanchard will also play with Portage Collegiate on their Field Lacrosse team this year.
