Portage's Junk Yard Dogs Cycling group was well represented at the Manitoba Cycling Association's annual Birch Mountain Cross Country Classic over the weekend.

JYD member Trevor Shackleton says a lot of people came out for the race, despite the Father's Day weekend.

"The forecast changed and it just turned out to be a fabulous day. The numbers were down a little bit, but overall the kids and adults from Portage did extremely well on a very tough course."

Shackleton was very impressed with all the Portage riders at the event. He says a lot of people drop out just because of the location.

"There are some people that get the Birch flu, because Birch is a tough place to ride. It's got a lot of hills and grass, and you have to bring your climbing legs with you if you're going to do really well. That's always been an asset to the people from Portage that ride there all the time."

The Junk Yard Dogs have an event planned tonight for their Bike Week celebrations. Shackleton explains.

"Tonight we're having a duathalon at Dump Field at 7 p.m. So I think most of the information is on our website, and everyone is welcome to come on out."

The Junk Yard Dogs' Duathalon is tonight at Dump Field at 7 p.m.
