After losing 5-1 to the first place Westman Wildcats on Friday in Hartney, the Central Plains CAPS came up with back-to-back Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League (MFMHL) wins to finish off a busy weekend.

The CAPS won 2-1 over the Interlake Lightning on Saturday at the BDO Centre, then went into Morden and pulled off a huge upset over the second place Pembina Valley Hawks Sunday afternoon.

"We had a great first period against the Hawks and got out to a 2-nothing lead. We didn't have the best second period against them, but we held them to just one. They had a push back but we held on. All things considered, third game in three days, a short bench with two regular's out, the girls showed a lot of character and they won because they came to compete."

Amy Klippenstein scored the lone goal in Hartney and was unable to play the rest of the weekend due to a reoccurring injury according to Nelissen. "Saturday we got goals from Lindsey Rutherford and Chloe Snaith, with Snaith's coming with just over 1:30 left in the final period. (Sunday) in Morden, Janelle Delaquis and Megan Ferg scored in the first period to get us out front. The Hawks made it 2-1 in the second on a Powerplay, however, Ella Wiebe -- playing back-to-back games -- stopped 47-of-49 in the two games to pick up the wins on the weekend." Wiebe made 15 saves versus interlake, and stopped 32-of-33 against Pembina Valley.

Lacey Friesen was the hard luck loser on Friday when the CAPS could not contain last year's MFMHL MVP and Team Canada Captain Morgan Bell who had five points on five goals. The CAPS ran a short bench all weekend and the players dug deep with limited AP's available. Chloe Snaith had four points on the weekend while Maiya Aschberg had three, Lindsey Rutherford and Marisa Fraser had two and Amy Klippenstein, Halle Edwards and Janelle Delaquis each had one.

"You hope a weekend like this can build some confidence," stresses Nelissen. "We know we're young, and when you get a win like that over the top two or three teams in the league, it should definitely build that confidence. It was a positive weekend, there were even positives in the 5-1 loss to Westman. The first was bad but we came back solid and lost 2-1 in the final two periods."

Westman is in town this weekend for two against the CAPS. They go Friday at 7:30 and Saturday at 4 p.m. Both games are at the BDO Centre in Portage.
