They're hot, those Central Plains male midget AAA Capitals.

And they don't seem to be showing any signs of slowing down.

Tyler Van Deynze, Chance Dickenson and Joey Moffatt each scored third period goals in a span of 1:19, breaking open a 1-1 deadlock to pace the Capitals to a 5-3 win over the Pembina Valley Hawks in Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League action Wednesday night at the PCU Centre in Portage la Prairie. Central Plains extended its winning streak to five-games.

“It's a hurdle to get over,” says Capitals head coach Brad Gnidziejko. “The last time we won four in a row we ended up following that with a four game skid. So it's good to win that fifth.”

“We didn't start very good tonight either,” the Caps' head coach continues. “But they brought it around ... and the third was our best period again.”

Dawson Braun and Jaxon Blight also scored for Central Plains. Jayden McCarthy, Elijah Carels and Tristan Day had the Hawks' goals.

McCarthy staked the visitors to a 1-0 lead at 12:29 of the first period. Blight responded for Central Plains midway through the second, beating Aaron Brunn.

It wasn't until just before the midway mark of the third period that the Capitals broke out. Van Deynze made it 2-1 by banking a shot in off a Hawks' defender at 8:50. Just over a minute later, Dickenson found the net to put the hosts ahead by two. Then Moffat made it 4-1 just 16 seconds later.

Carels cut the lead to 4-2 with 7:41 in regulation, firing a shot past Miles Minor. But Braun would restore the Capitals' three-goal cushion with just over three minutes remaining, pushing a puck past Brunn. Day tagged on a goal for the Hawks in the final minute.

Minor made 19 saves in the win, while Brunn stopped 30 taking the loss. Central Plains outshot Pembina Valley 35-22 while going 0 for 10 on the power play; Pembina Valley finished 1 for 5.

Central Plains (10-4-1-0) will look to run its win streak to six-games Saturday, when they host Brandon (7-4-1-1) at 4 p.m. at the BDO Centre. The Capitals won the only previous meeting between the two clubs this season, 5-3 to open the season on Sept. 30.
