The Portage Disc Golf tournament is on!

Despite concerns surrounding COVID-19, the disc golf tournament will still be taking place next month at Island Park. Last year saw a great turnout of 39 contestants, one away from their capacity. Tournament director Cody Buhler says the support this year has already been even more impressive.

“We’re excited to say this year it sold out in 24 hours,” says Buhler. “From when I first registered the tournament and put it up online, 24 hours later we had all 40 disc golfers and we’ve actually had to create a waiting list. It has been amazing to see that support.”

Buhler says he thought they would get to full capacity this year but was quite surprised at how quickly the spots filled up. He talks about the likelihood of having more people take part in next year’s tournament.

“It’s definitely something we’ll have to look into,” Butler explains. “Whether we want to create a two-day tournament or if we want to somehow expand the format. However, the way we have our course set up, there are just nine individual baskets, so you can’t have too many more than 40 people on the course at a time, otherwise, it gets too full. So, I kind of like having it full at 40 but going forward we will have to look at that.”

The tournament takes place Saturday, August 22nd with a round in the morning and a round in the afternoon.

For anyone looking to get started in the sport of disc golf, Buhler says there is a group of golfers who meet every Thursday at 6 p.m. and are always open to new players.
