The Female Midget Capitals open their Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League season today in Portage la Prairie.

Central Plains fell in the MFMHL Final last year in 5 games to the Yellowhead Chiefs. They had a large number of graduating players over the summer, and will look a lot different this season.

"We've got some core girls back from last year," says Head Coach Ferdi Nelissen when asked about the roster. "We won't have many veterans in the line-up, but we feel we can compete. We'll just keep progressing as the year goes on, and hopefully, we can be very competitive come the end of the season."

The Caps host the Winnipeg Avros today at the PCU Centre. Nelissen's expecting a high pace from his players.

"We have the skills, the speed, and the skaters to carry some pace. So we want to make sure we're going hard on the forecheck, taking time and space away, creating turnovers and creating opportunities off that, and using our speed to create problems for the other team."

The Caps and Avros go at 5 p.m.
