Barry Hooke of Portage la Prairie's going for his 10-year on the board of directors with Golf Manitoba.

Hooke was appointed to a two-year term last night and is thrilled to continue working with Golf Manitoba. He says it's been a long, and positive experience with Golf Manitoba, and explains how he got involved as a director.

"I'm an avid golfer, and I've been playing in Golf Manitoba events since I was a junior in the 60's and I've been playing in their events every year. It took me a while to decide if I could do the role, I decided I wanted to and got in, and I've really enjoyed it."

Hooke's the chairman of the Volunteer Committee and expects he'll be in the same role for the next two years. He says they run a lot of tournament throughout the year, and they rely on volunteers and Golf Manitoba.

"Without Golf Manitoba all the tournaments we run, the 26 tournaments for ladies, men, juniors, junior girls, and also the cubs, those tournaments wouldn't be there if it weren't for Golf Manitoba. That's our biggest thing, getting the tournaments, and getting the younger people to start the game, play the game, and teach the game."

In the past, when you became a member of a golf club you were immediately part of Golf Manitoba and Golf Canada. Hooke says now younger players enjoy getting out to multiple courses in the city, unlike in places like Portage where there isn't much selection. He says if people stop joining Golf Manitoba they won't be able to host amazing events every year, or some of the programs they offer.

Golf Manitoba only employs 3 people and is mostly run by volunteers.
