The Central Region's dominance at the Powersmart Manitoba Summer Games continued yesterday.

After Phase 1 of competition, the Central Region leads with 74 medals, 33 gold, 21 silver, and 20 bronze. Team Winnipeg gold sits in second with 55, and Winnipeg Blue's in third with 40.

The Central Region Boy's baseball team is bringing home a silver medal. They fell 5-3 to Eastman in the final, in a game that came down to the final inning. Central's 13-Year-Old Catcher Riley Borody says they gave it their all but couldn't buy a timely hit.

"We started off good and it was a close game until the seventh when they scored 3, and we only scored 1. We left runners on first and second to end the game."

Borody says they grew as a team really fast, which made for a great few days.

"We kind of started off not really knowing each other, and we got to know each other as the three days went on. It's a fun time for the 3 days we're here."

The Central Region's Girl's Basketball Team also brought home a medal yesterday. They won 76-54 over Winnipeg Blue, scoring the most points in a single game for the women's competition. Head Coach Emile Wallack says thanks to a large lead toward the end of regulation he was able to get everyone some playing time in the final, which really meant something to the players.

"I had trust in the girls that I was putting on the court during the last few moments, and they were very grateful for that. Everyone was very excited and couldn't wait for the game to finish."

12-Year-Old La Salle Sailor Kendra Penner's Gold in Optimist Female Sailing, and 14-Year-Old Carman Windsurfer Cameron Duncan's Bronze also added to the Central Region's total.

The second phase of competition kicks off today with volleyball at 8:30 a.m. Team Central's U-14 team's taking on Team Westman in the opening game of the day. 14-Year-Old Middle Power Jenna Biberdorf outlines her strategy heading into the competition.

Portage la Prairie is represented well on the Central Softball team, with 4 Shwaluks making the team. Assistant Coach Trevor Shwaluk is joined by his 3 daughters Maddie, Paige, and Kiera. Maddie says she's pretty fortunate to be able to enjoy the competition with her family.

"Going out there and trying to have a lot of fun and hopefully, win a couple games. It's going to be a lot of fun to play in them, and I'm lucky enough to experience it with my sisters."
