There's still some time until the Central Plains Female Midget Capitals team is selected for the 2016-17 MFMHL season.

The Caps wrapped up one of their tryout skates last night at the PCU Centre. Caps' Head Coach Ferdi Nelissen says it was another small group vying for a spot on the team, but he has a lot of confidence in the returning players.

"This year we're short numbers, and we're waiting on some releases and some (players) to come our way. We like our core group of 10, 11, 12 girls, and we'll build around that."

A great shot from one of the forwards trying out

The Caps fell in the MFMHL Championship last season, and with the Esso Cup in Morden this spring, the competition will be even more fierce. Nelissen says that's the last thing they're focused on.

"Everyone is going to be gunning for it. Just because Manitoba hosts it, doesn't mean we're going to get more than 1 team in it. We're worried about rebuilding our program first and getting it off the ice, and making sure we're competitive."

An intersquad game was scheduled for later this week, but it's been cancelled due to the low number of girls trying out.
