Portage Minor Hockey Association's Portage Cup is this weekend in Portage la Prairie.

The event is centred on Squirt and Novice players with the first two games of the tournament this morning at 8 and 8:15.

"I think we have 21 teams coming this year. It's the ninth year doing it and it just keeps getting bigger every year. We got two or three more teams out of Saskatchewan this year, and a couple from Ontario wanted to come but we couldn't accommodate them ice-wise. It should be a great weekend at the rink and the community should see a huge boost in business this weekend."

The 05' Central Plains Capitals take on the 05' Macdonald Mini Hawks on Portage Mutual at 8, while the 07' Central Plains Golden Hawks face the 07' Pembina Valley Cougars on Stride Place Arena at 8:15.

"We're doing a progressive 50/50 with winners announced twice daily on Friday and Saturday. We've got 16 silent auction prizes with most of them being worth over $100 and a 50" TV for a grand prize. If you want to watch some hockey come on down because it's free."

He adds they've got a new set of trophies this year thanks to Portage la Prairie's Boston Pizza. The championship games are Sunday.
