The Manitoba Provincial Judoka Championships were over the weekend in Virden.

The Portage Judo Club sent 6 fighters to the event, and all but 1 returned home with medals. Judo Coach Brian Case says it would have been 6, but Dwight Ducharme had to withdraw from the competition.

"He was the only one, and he was expected to do very well in that class, but he fractured a finger we suspect is what happened. I never heard when he went to the hospital, but he got hurt in his first fight and he couldn't continue anymore."

Case couldn't be happier with his fighters' performance at the event. He talks about their silver -- and bronze -- medallists.

"Duncan Campbell ran up against a very hot fighter, and hopefully he'll meet him in Portage and reverse the roll on that. Dave Jackson has only been out a few times, and he just transferred here from British Columbia, and he did very well too for his first tournament."

Natasha Burton brought home one of 3 gold medal for the Portage Judo Club. Case says their other two gold medallists were the underdogs going in.

"Both Wade Campbell and Sydney Pearson were sort of unknowns going into it, and they both fought very well and defeated belts much higher than themselves -- and did it quite handily -- so they were real surprises."

The Portage Judo Club is hosting their tournament April 16th at the BDO Centre.
