Portage Collegiate Institute's (PCI) junior varsity Saints settled for the silver medal this weekend. They fell 44-42 to the Kelvin Clippers in the West Winnipeg Athletic Conference Tier 2 basketball championship.

"We had a seven-point lead at the half and thought we had the game under control," says head coach Dave McLeod. "...then we had about a six or seven-minute lapse in the third quarter where they evened the score, and I think we panicked a little bit. I think that's kind of what did us in, we just didn't play a complete game."

The Saints and Clippers played three times this season, each game being decided by two or less.

"We had a fantastic season. I told the girls when we took a timeout with about a minute half left in the game. I said no matter what happens in this game, the final game doesn't define what our season was. We were 23-5 on the season, won third place in a tournament, won a couple of consolation victories, we also won a tournament. It's unfortunate we couldn't finish the job but it's a fantastic group of girls and I really enjoyed my time with them."

McLeod's looking forward to next season with eight Grade 9 players returning.
