The Portage Padres, Neepawa Cubs and Minnedosa Mavericks were all winners in the Santa Clara Baseball League Wednesday.

The Padres handed the Carberry Royals their first loss of the season. They won 11-1 at Rotary Republic Park in Portage la Prairie. Jason Kirkland pitched the complete game for the Padres. He finished with seven strikeouts and gave up one run on two hits.

"We managed to play well," says Kirkland. "It's always nice playing in front of an offence as good as ours, it just makes pitching a lot easier."

The win was Kirkland's third of the season. Dustin Donald got things going for Portage in the first inning with a big three-run home run.

"It was just a good start from everybody," says Donald. "We were hitting the ball good and scored a bunch of runs early on to help Jason (Kirkland) out. He pitched a great game, all seven, so you can't ask much more from him."

The Padres are the only undefeated team remaining in the league. They're 3-0-1 and one point ahead of Carberry in first place.

Neepawa won 10-0 over Ebb and Flow. Cam Tibbet had a two-run shot in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it 8-0. The Cubs are now 1-2-1 while the Lakers drop to 1-3.

The Minnedosa Mavericks were in top form in Minnedosa. They downed the A's 16-1 in front of their home fans. The Mavericks are now tied with Carberry at 3-1, The A's are 1-3.

The next Santa Clara action comes Friday when the A's visit the Royals in Carberry, while the Mavericks welcome the Pirates to Minnedosa. Both games start at 7 p.m.
