A local volleyball club team had a golden weekend.

Storm Volleyball Club 16U Blue squad defeated Providence Junior Pilots in three sets 25-21, 18-25, 15-13, in Saturday's final to win the Pirates Volleyball Tournament at Grant Park High School in Winnipeg April 21-22.

“We've kind of had a slow start to our season and haven't placed as well as I would have liked in the last few tournaments,” says Storm Blue coach Teri Duclos. “But the last few practices we've been really focusing on blocking, defence and working as a team. They really came together this past weekend and pulled out the win.”

Storm Blue finished first in its pool during the preliminary round at the tournament, then defeated Fury in the first playoff round to set up a semifinal against Big Sand Heat. It took three sets for Storm to get through the semis, winning the third and deciding one 15-7 to set up their date in the final against Junior Pilots.

Duclos adds, Storm Blue has two more prep tournaments upcoming to get ready for the Volleyball Canada National Championship in Calgary, Alta., May 20.

“I'm extremely proud of the girls and can't tell you how impressed I am with how they came together this past weekend,” Duclos notes. “I'm looking forward to the next few tournaments.”
