The Manitoba Crocus Invitational Synchronized Skating Competition is today at the PCU Centre. The Portage Skating Club is hosting the event, and Coach Lynn Cabak says it's a cool event for all ages of skaters.

"This is what makes synchronized skating so great is that it not only offers an opportunity for beginner skaters to have some fun, but it's also a great opportunity for adult skaters. So there are some adult teams that are going to be taking part in this event as well."

Cabak says 23 teams will be attending in the event, with over 200 skaters involved. She explains how points are awarded at the competition.

"Some of the required elements are a block movement, or a line movement, or a wheel movement, and they're assessed on their ability to perform that element based on their speed, their skill, and their unison."

The Portage Skating Club doesn't have a team entered into the competition, but they do have a single skater taking part. Local Skater Melissa Butler is part of the University of Manitoba team. Cabak encourages people to check out the event.

"Because this is a team event we understand that it's very spirited, and very noisy, and every body is cheering. People stick around for the whole entire event, and it's going to be something quite unique for Portage to see."

The event's Opening Ceremonies start at 12:45 p.m. at the PCU Centre. The competition begins at 1.
