The MJHL’s Portage Terriers got back in the win column last night beating the Winkler Flyers 3-0 at the Morden Access Event Centre. It was the final home game for the Flyers in Morden while their arena was under repair. 

Britt League made some highlight reel saves for the Winkler Flyers in the first period keeping it scoreless. His team was outshot 17-11.

Portage capitalized on their lone power play opportunity in the second period to open the scoring. Joey Moffatt beat League with a low shot off the rush.Portage added two insurance markers in the third period to put the game out of reach. After a disallowed goal the Terriers responded on the power play. Jacob Brown slammed home a rebound in the slot. Six minutes later Caelan McPhee’s point shot found its way through traffic to make it 3-0.

Ethan Peterson would hold down the fort making 24 saves en route to his first shutout of the season. The Terriers are now 2-0 against the Flyers this season. 

It was the first MJHL game of the season for 19 year old defenseman Sam Huston who had rejoined the Terriers from the Kootenay Ice of the WHL. The 6’5” Brandon product adjusted as the night went along, playing on a pairing with Tyler Van Deynze.

It’s a quick turnaround for Portage; they are back at home tonight against the Neepawa Natives. Portage came from behind to beat Neepawa 5-4 in overtime in their last meeting. Puck drop is set for 7:30 pm.
