A strong second period propelled the Portage Terriers over the Neepawa Natives last night 8-2. It was a great night for Kolton Shindle and Mac Walkington who each had two goals. The Terrier power play was a solid 3/10.

It was a slow start for Portage; the shots were there, but the scoring didn’t come until the final three minutes. Ty Barnstable finished off a two on one pass from Ocean Wiesblatt to open things up.

The Terriers came out like a different team in the second period jumping all over Neepawa. Reilly Funk scored a nice goal over Brendan Benoit’s shoulder to start things off. Kolton Shindle blasted one off the post and in off the rush less than a minute later. Jared Roy tipped in a power play goal within two minutes. Up by five the Terriers never let off the gas. Late in the period Joey Moffatt tapped home a goal with the man advantage. That would be the last straw for Benoit who hit the showers. He stopped 15 of 20. Kolby Thornton came into the game in relief.

To keep the game from getting out of hand a number of penalties were called in the third period. Portage would score first with the extra man; Walkington notched his first of the night. The Natives would finally get on the board when Drayson Skulmoski knocked a puck in on the power play. They would exchange goals before the end of the third to make it 8-2.

Nathan Moore made 17 saves in the victory. Portage has now won two straight and are first in the MJHL with 16 points. Portage is on the road again Tuesday night in Selkirk. The game will be broadcast on CFRY starting with the pregame show at 7:20 pm.
