The 16th annual Treherne Marathon is still a go, however, it will be structured very differently.

Due to COVID-19, the marathon will not be ran as a traditional race where everyone has the same start and finish line and competes at the same time. Instead, it will be done virtually. Race director Melanie Wall describes how it will work.

“We have five different races this year: one mile, five kilometre, ten kilometre, half marathon and the full marathon. They can be ran at any location, anywhere around the world,” says Wall. “They have the whole month of September, instead of just the one Sunday morning at the end of September, to complete it.”

Wall says participants can record their distance and time it took to run that distance on the ‘Run Keeper’ app and then submit it to them. Wall adds it is open to anyone, noting they already have confirmed participants racing in Australia and in the United States.

Wall explains how runners may use this race as training.

“I know there’s a lot of people interested in participating in (the Treherne Marathon) because it’s about a month away from the Manitoba Marathon,” says Wall. “The Manitoba Marathon is typically in June but they pushed their date to Thanksgiving weekend. So, this is actually a good training opportunity for those participating in that.”

She describes how people can sign up.

“You just need to go to our website, trehernerun.com," Wall explains. “It’s a very affordable race, it’s $25 for any of the events and each participant would receive a medal after submitting their results.”

Wall says all of the proceeds from the marathon go back to different organizations in the Treherne community. They also give a portion of the money generated to Central Plains Cancer Services.
