The Portage Collegiate Trojans begin the Manitoba High School Field Lacrosse League (MHSFLL) playoffs today.

They finished the regular season 4-3-1 and in second place in Division II. Westwood finished undefeated in first place, they did finish with a tie they suffered at the hands of the Trojans.

"The players on the team are feeling pretty confident," says assistant coach Bill Marsh. "We've had some good things happen as the year has gone along, we didn't end on the note we wanted to, but it did highlight some things we had to work on for this week's practices and I think we're getting there."

The Trojans were placed in the third division for playoffs, and are ranked the top seed going in. They'll be taking on Miles Mac today in their opening game of the playoffs.

"We just need to play strong," says attacker Megan Ferg. "Everyone needs to come ready to play and play their own game. We need to play really defensive, and get it out of zone quick to be successful here."

Ferg was recently named the MHSFLL's Player of the Week for her strong performance a week ago. She loves the physicality of the sport and says her hockey skills really help her out.

"I don't really think about things too much out there," laughs Ferg. "You just go for it all out. I know I'm not one of the scorers so I know I'm out there to get it and get it off to one of the players that can shoot."

Win or lose the Trojans will be playing Saturday at noon in either the championship semifinal or the consolation semifinal.
