It's high school provincial championship weekend around Manitoba.

Starting things off is the Manitoba High School Athletic Association's provincial baseball championship in Altona. Portage Collegiate earned a spot in the coveted tournament by winning the Zone 4 Championship last week over tournament hosts the W C Miller Aces.

"We're thrilled to be going," says assistant coach Blaine Boyle. "We knew the Aces would be tough in the championship. We've been playing them a long time and they've got good pitchers, they hit the ball a little better than they usually do that day but our offence -- like it usually does -- carried us. We've got a great line-up one through 13 guys, and if we execute we should do well out there."

The Trojans are the number one seed heading into the provincial tournament. They'll open things today at 9 a.m. against Pilot Mound. Boyle says they've got a strong line-up of confident pitchers.

"There's no panic when we get down runs," says Boyle. "Our pitchers know we're going to score runs because we have a lot of good hitters, a lot of good power, and the guys know that. If they're off a little bit they can work their way through it, there is no panic from the bench. The boys have won a lot of championships over the last four years and they know if they bring it they'll have a good shot at winning."

The Trojans play again at 11:45 a.m. against last year's champions the Dauphin Clippers. Get the full tournament draw here.
