The PCI Trojans kick off their 2016 Winnipeg High School Football League season tonight.

They host the Tec Voc Hornets at PCI Field. The Trojans finished last season with a 3-4 record, while the Hornets finished at the bottom at 0-7. Trojans' Head Coach Brent Irwin named the 6 captains of the team at last night's practice, and Grade 12 Captain Lucas Francis says it's really motivating to be named.

"It feels pretty good honestly. It's like a big boost in energy."

Fellow Grade 12 Captain Tristan Zychowski feels the team looks ready to go, and says as long as everyone has bought into the system they'll be successful.

"It's definitely important. We all have to be on the same page and get together, and once we're all working as a cohesive unit it's just smooth riding."

Irwin knows there's a lot of changeover in high school football, so it's hard to judge an opponent year-to-year. He says they need to be sure they're fighting themselves, as well as an opponent on the field.

"If you're undisciplined, and you take selfish penalties -- which we talked about -- it can cost your team the game. So we're trying to not beat ourselves, we want to just beat the opponent."

Irwin says the starting QB will be named prior to the game. The Trojans and Hornets go at 5 p.m., with a special presentation prior to kickoff.
