The PCI Trojans lived up to their number one seed at the High School Provincial Baseball Championship in Altona Thursday.

Two big wins including one over last year's provincial champions carried them to a 2-0 finish to sit first in Pool A. With the victories PCI locked up a spot in the playoff round Friday afternoon.

"I think offensively we have to be pleased with the day," says head coach Jay Dewis. "There were a lot of contributions and hits from different guys, but we do have some areas to clean up defensively. Hopefully, we can make those improvements going forward."

The Trojans started the tournament off with a staggering 20-1 trouncing of Pilot Mound. Their second match of the day was up against the Dauphin Clippers, last year's provincial champions. They came away with a 10-3 win, and a little payback after falling to the Clippers in the 2016 final.

Portage was ready from the start and jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first inning against Pilot Mound. They then added six, seven, and one, in the following three innings. Jayson Brooks started on the mound for PCI, Matthew Tompkins and Kyle Van Deynze came in as relievers for an inning each as the game was called at the bottom of the fifth inning.

Portage found themselves trailing the Clippers 2-0 after the first inning of their second game. They answered right back in the top of the second with two runs to tie the game 2-2. The Clippers managed to pull back out front in the fourth with a single run but again Portage would claw their way back an inning later to tie the game at 3's. The Trojans kept the Clippers off the board after that while adding another run in the sixth, and six in the seventh and final inning to close out the game. Chance Dickenson gave up three runs on three hits over three innings pitched, Brody Moffat came in to close out the game and gave up just one hit over four.

"I think just defensively we can be better," admits Dewis. "I think we made four errors in the last game, and there were some base-running things we could clean up. We will make the adjustments and be sharp going into the weekend."

The quarterfinals start Friday afternoon. The Trojans play at 2:30 p.m. against second place from Pool C.
