Water Polo match that was scheduled for Saturday at the PCU Centre has been cancelled.

Portage Regional Recreation Authority's Recreation Manager Monica Chorney explains Manitoba Water Polo wasn't able to get enough athletes to commit to the event, and are not making the trip. She says the reason they wanted to have the showcase is they're looking at starting water polo in Portage.

"Manitoba Water Polo is looking at coming out in June and working with some of our swimming instructors and giving us some training on it. So we can offer it either in the summer of the fall."

The PRRA's excited about bringing the new activity to Portage, and Chorney explains how it could work.

"Depending on your age group, you can do it where they stand on the bottom -- and as they get older and progress in their skills -- then they have to be doing the egg beater in the deeper water. You adjust the rules accordingly."

Chorney says they even want to try and set up a rec league for adults.

"We're looking at possibly doing it like a shinny hockey style as well. Where we'll have a drop in time, and you divide into teams and play water polo."

She feels the interest is there, as many people have never experienced the sport and would love to give it a try.
