It was a great day for golf Monday in Portage for the 2016 Portage Toyota and RV Senior Men's Open. 61 year old Mike Berney from Transcona came out on top of the field after shooting a 71 on the day. Berney comments on his second win in six years at the Open in Portage.

"I hit a lot of good shots today and my putting was good on the greens as well. The greens were very nice; they've improved quite a bit over the last few years and it's good to see them up to a decent speed. I didn't have a 'shot of the day' today, I played pretty solid."

He says the Senior Men's Open in Portage is always very well done, which is why it's been going on for so long.

"It's exceptionally well done because you've got the support of the whole town and when we come to these events, that's the first thing we look at. As far as sponsorships and the amount of people from the club getting involved and volunteering their time and that, it just makes it a very well run event. The amount of damage they had on the course from the storm, and how hard the guys worked to get it playable today was phenomenal."

This year was the 37th year for the tournament and saw 152 golfers on the fairways at the Portage la Prairie Golf Club.
