Get There From Here is a new art exhibit opening tomorrow evening at the Portage and District Arts Centre's main gallery. It's a spectacular 220-piece showing of oil paintings by Nicole Bauberger, and marketing and events coordinator Lee Beaton says it accompanies a special event in the afternoon.

"Nicole actually is here from Whitehorse, Yukon, and she's going to be doing a demonstration in the afternoon as well," says Beaton, "She's going to be here from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. She'll be painting as though she was set up in her truck. For the opening at 7:00 p.m. she's going to do an artist's talk."

Bauberger drove in a truck across Canada and stopped along the way to paint scenes from the back of her truck, and then moved on to her next inspiring location. The paintings are each one square foot and depict scenes from St. John's, Newfoundland-Labrador, to Victoria on the Trans-Canada Highway, and up through BC to the Yukon, and into Inuvik, Northwest Territories.

Beaton says the paintings will include Portage area scenery made in 2011. She adds some road workers were busy on the highway when she stopped here and asked what she was doing. Bauberger explained her effort, and they left only to return later and inquire as to whether or not the painting will be on display on the internet. Beaton says she provided them with her business card, and they gifted her with a high visibility vest. Bauberger recounts that as something that let her know Portage is a friendly community.
