The Portage Pairs and Squares celebrated its 65th anniversary Thursday at the Herman Prior Centre in Portage la Prairie.

The square and round dancing club is the longest standing in Manitoba and they celebrated that fact with dinner and a night of dancing.

"We are the longest standing square dancing club in Manitoba that we know of," says Dianne Sloane, Convenor of the 65th Anniversary. "We've been planning this even since last June. I've been part of the club since 2001, it's been fun going through all the scrapbooks to see how huge the club was at times. There were 80 members in Portage at one time, with three clubs in Portage and one in Southport as well."

Sloane says 17 square dance clubs from across the province were at the event with over 130 dancers taking to the floor.

"We had clubs from Virden, Swan Valley, Beausejour, Brandon, Winnipeg, and they call came to share in this celebration."

The club meets weekly each Thursday throughout the winter months for dances at the Herman Prior Centre.
