Everyone's a winner!

People had a blast at Recreation Opportunities for Kids' Battle of the Badges hockey game between the local RCMP and Portage la Prairie Fire Department last night at Stride Place in Portage la Prairie.

"It's been fantastic," says ROK Recreation Supervisor Lynne Parker. "I don't even know what to say. It's beyond my wildest expectations of what it could've been."

The game ended in a 9-9 tie after a small "malfunction" on the score clock led to the game-tying Fire Department. Hundreds came out to take in the game and help ROK raise some funds for their upcoming year. There was a silent auction to go along with the game with a signed Arron Asham jersey and several other great items.

"Everyone was so supportive about giving us things to put into this auction," says Parker. "It tells me the community sees what we're doing is good. We want to do so much more, and being able to raise some more money because we still don't know about some of our grants. So this is huge."

The fire department had a special guest player on their team last night as former NHL'er and Portage la Prairie native Arron Asham suited up for the club.

When they asked I jumped at the chance to play," says Asham. "I had a great time and it's for a great cause. It was a lot of fun."

Parker feels after the success of last night's game they may have to make it an annual event.
