The Manitoba Hydro buildings in Altona and Carman have finally sold, four years after hitting the market.

When the facility in Altona initially closed, the town jumped at the opportunity to purchase it in order to control what kind of business the empty building might attract, according to Mayor Melvin Klassen.

"We felt that we wanted to make sure that we knew what was coming into that area because it was zoned in a certain way, and we knew that we hadn't had a lot of commerical coming into town, so we wanted to make sure that we aligned it with the other commerical buildings that are in the area so we felt that we wanted to have a say as to what's happening there," he said.

The purchase was finalized within the last two months, and now SK2 Custom Homes will rent the building from the town.

As for Carman, LCL Construction will occupy the former Manitoba Hydro district office.

"It's great to see because it's been empty for quite some time and we've been after the Manitoba Hydro and government to quickly try to sell it," Mayor Bob Mitchell said, adding that he hopes the construction company's old building will attract new business. "It's just a relief to see buildings full and not empty."
