Assessments are on the rise in the RM of Cartier.

Cartier Council recently heard from the Manitoba Property Assessment Branch about the impact reassessments in 2018 will have on the total tax base. Reeve Dale Fossay says, overall, assessments in the Rural Municipality will increase 7.8% next year, or $23-million. The report to Cartier Council explained 2,176 properties were part of the total assessment and 1,251 will see tax increases while 925 see decreases.

Farmland assessments will rise 15.4%, commercial/industrial goes up 5.8% and residential property increases by 1.7%.

"That would mean, assuming the municipality still has similar expenses, homeowners will see a slight reduction in their taxes as they did in their last assessment," Fossay explains. "And farmland would probably see an increase. I would estimate that to be about $1 per acre."

"We're not surprised at this," continues Fossay. "Everyone who farms knows farmland prices are going up and the housing prices have been pretty much stationary the past couple of years."

Reassessments are based on land sale values as of April 2016 and impact the 2018 and 2019 tax years.
