2012 saw the beginning of plans for an assisted living facility in Portage la Prairie when Portage la Prairie MLA Ian Wishart made the announcement. A not-for-profit corporation's since been established for the endeavour, and plans are working toward making the 50-unit housing complex a reality. Currently, they're looking at land east of Rotary housing for the location. Assisted Living Corporation chair Allan Braun says the need's quite apparent.

(L-R) Allan Braun & Vern Crandell at RM of Portage la Prairie council"We're excited about this particular project," exclaims Braun. "There's a demonstrated need for this. There are waiting lists in the condo units that are in Portage la Prairie. There are waiting lists in the nursing homes. Consequently, we feel this is a very worthwhile project -- a project that could benefit the city in many different ways."

Plans are moving forward and Braun and co-chair Vern Crandell presented the request today for the RM of Portage la Prairie to write a letter of support for the effort to give it recognition for future requests for funding. Reeve Kam Blight says the next RM meeting will focus on that discussion. He adds he can't see why the RM wouldn't choose to provide that letter.
