Let No One Be Alone. That's that initiative that Brenda Tonn started in 2011 to help eliminate social isolation. Tonn is the Senior Support Coordinator in Plumas and says social isolation is a big issue among seniors. She explains exactly what Let No One Be Alone week is.

"The Let No One Be Alone Week of Awareness is about reaching out to isolated seniors and doing what you can to make their lives not so lonely! This year it runs from May 1-7 and it's 5th annual week of awareness."

Brenda TonnTonn explains what senior support centres around the province do during the week.

"During the week we plan event and invite people to bring someone alone to the event. We also encourage people to do things on their own such as calling a grandparent, calling a neighbour, visiting someone who lives alone, taking them out for a drive, helping with yardwork, and basically anything just to help out those people living alone. Just letting them know that they really aren't alone by giving up some of your time is really the best gift you can give."

Tonn notes one of the events on schedule for this week.

"We're having a bbq this Monday (May 2nd) in Plumas at the drop-in centre, between 11:30am and 1:30pm. We're having some young kids from the elementary school come over to play their ukuleles for us."

Tonn stresses we all have the power to care, adding caring is is the best thing we can do to help the issue of social isolation. For more information on Let No One Be Alone week click here.
