The 4H Beef Clubs of MacGregor, Oakville and Portage were busy over this past weekend at the Portage Ex.

Portage Beef Club leader Melissa Murray shares the 145th Portage Ex was hot, yet enjoyable. She explains the kids had a day of fun on Friday with games of tug-a-war and biffy races, while Saturday and Sunday featured the inter-club competitions.

Portage Beef Club member Avery Coltart shares a bit about some of Saturday's competitions.

"Always the first show is grooming, so then you gotta make your steer look as good as possible and make him look better than he did when he came in. Then throughout the day you'll go through showmanship and just see how well you can present your calf. Then in the afternoon it's the big prize, and that's our championship round."

Coltart adds in the evening there was the steer sale and all the support they received from the buyers was great.

The steer which was sold for the highest price was Claire Lavallee's Angus X which sold for 5.10$/lb.

The 4H year wraps up with the Ex and director with the fair board, Shawn Cabak, notes it's good to see the Beef Club members having fun competing as the year wraps up.

"The members work hard, they put a lot of effort into their projects and it's good to see them competing out in the ring and having fun, being good sports and showcasing all of their skills that they've learned throughout the year in their 4H project."

This year's Grand Champion Steer belonged to Brock Sigurdson of Oakville while Cindy Jack, also from Oakville, took Reserve Champion and Homegrown Champion. Jack and Sigurdson also won Grand Champ and Reserve Champ respectively for grooming. The Grand Champion in the heifer competition belonged to Kaitlyn Davey from Portage and Avery Coltart had the Reserve Champion. Coltart also had the win in the Three-Year Cow-Calf class.

Claire Lavallee of Oakville won the Grand Champion for showmanship and Oakville's Jonathan Karsin won the Reserve. Karsin also took the Reserve Championship in the Cow-Calf competition. Cow-Calf Grand Champion went to Kaitlyn Davey.
