Today sees Parliament re-opening after the summer break.

The opposition Tories are ready, after spending last week in Halifax, at a retreat.

Portage-Lisgar MP, and Conservative House Leader, Candice Bergen stresses they're the only party with the taxpayer in mind.

"We have a Liberal government that has been spending at an unbelievable pace. We know the deficit's going to be much bigger than they promised, and they're already talking about raising taxes. The NDP aren't going to oppose it, but Conservatives will oppose increasing taxes."

Bergen says the Opposition will push for clarification on the government's plan to send peacekeepers to places like Africa, following the prime minister's meetings at the UN.

"He should not be in New York doing that. He should be talking to the Canadian people, and talking to Parliament, and taking it to Parliament before making such a big decision. So we're also concerned about the Liberals ramming things through the House of Commons, and not talking to Canadians.

She adds her party's concerned about the Liberals' plans for electoral reform.

"We believe that Canadians should have a say. The precedent really has been established in other provinces, and in other countries, where, when electoral reform happens to this extent, a referendum is called, and so far the government hasn't committed to doing that. So we're going to be pushing very hard on that, and we're hoping Canadians will be asking for the same thing."
