The new leader of the federal Conservatives is garnering plenty of attention for the party, in the wake of Saturday's vote.

Andrew Scheer narrowly won the post, over 13 ballots.

Selkirk-Interlake-Eastman MP James Bezan calls it an exciting election process.

"It actually turned out to be very suspenseful, and went right down to the wire, right to the 13th ballot," he says, "And Andrew is going to be a great leader. He's a young individual, only 38 years old. He's a family man who understands middle class Canadians, and really can connect, I think, with people across this country."

Bezan describes the Conservatives as strong and united.

Andrew Scheer

"We're all focused on defeating Justin Trudeau and the Liberals," he says, "Andrew will do a great job leading us to victory. We're going to focus in on the matters that Canadians care about -- increasing prosperity, getting the economy rolling, undoing all the harmful and regressive policies that the Trudeau government has introduced."

Bezan thinks Scheer will connect will appeal to a key group of people across the country.

"The connection to the millennials, and the youth of this country, is something I think we will have an advantage now," he says, "The Liberals have taken the millennial vote for granted, and they have not done anything for them, other than making it more difficult to get a job, and making it more difficult to buy a house."
