Bike week wrapped up yesterday in Portage la Prairie.

The celebration of active transportation finished up with a bike to school day for students, where each school was offered a prize for the most students that rode to school. Active Transportation Committee members Maureen Owens and Heather Bruce were thrilled with the support throughout from the community.

"It was great," says Owens. "This is an initiative of Portage Active Transportation Committee so we're always promoting active transportation in the community. It's great to see people out, and all levels of people. We've had all kinds of things all week for different abilities and different interests."

Bruce says they've got some great things in the works for Portage la Prairie's bike and walking paths in the future.

"We're trying to get all the trails paved. I'm not sure about lighting on all of them if more will be added or not. We're currently working on a map of the bike and walking paths. That should be ready in the fall. So people will be able to see that in the fall and ultimately we want to have Portage connected."

Bruce adds they want people to be able to get anywhere in town on a safe biking path.
