As details of the Tories' provincial budget sink in throughout Manitoba, reactions are still coming in.

RM of Portage la Prairie reeve Kam Blight outlines some key points he's pleased with.

"I guess it's just that they're following through on their word and their promises through the elections. I like the fact that there's still a large amount of moneys being designated toward infrastructure which is one of our biggest concerns. And that the fair say is still in play. I think that's very important to all municipalities. I'm very pleased to see that that was recognized and reiterated again in our budget."

Blight shares his first reaction to the news of the projected time the government will take to clear away the deficit

"My first reaction is somewhat relief. I'm not sure how anyone can expect a government to reduce such a large deficit in a very short period of time without experiencing very significant cuts, and reducing a lot of possible progress we could be making in our municipality and our province. I think that we have to be very realistic in what they have to work with. And also I think we have to appreciate the fact that this government has only been in power for six weeks. And we can't expect them to work miracles right off the bat. They can come out with a bunch of empty promises, and say that everything is great, and 'Watch us, we're the best. We're going to fix this all up.' But we have to be realistic about that. And I really like the direction they've chosen."

In light of no significant stay-the-course presentation, Blight says baby steps is an accurate way to put it. He understands the government has to get a handle on where they're at and how they can fix everything. Coming into a lot smaller budget in Portage, he says he knows it's not easy to make grandiose changes that you don't want to do in any short amount of time. Blight says this avoids rash decisions. He adds he has to wrap his head around the budget a little more, but he's pleased with what he saw.
