Police across the country are gearing up for an increase in the amount of traffic on roads and highways. The Labour Day Long Weekend is often the final time cottagers and campers head out for the summer, and Portage la Prairie RCMP Sergeant Brian Brewer says their members are also going to be hitting the roads.

"This weekend, as the last long weekend of the summer, we know the people are out there. Part of our job is road safety, so we're going to have extra officers out there patrolling to help keep the roads safe, and to remove trouble drivers that are causing an issue."

He says those heading out need to ensure they're obeying the rules of the road, driving safely, and as always, not drinking and driving. He says it's important to be vigilant on the roadways, as you're not only lookout out for yourself, but also those who you may pass.

For those hoping hit the trails with ATVs this weekend, Brewer says there are some things you'll need to consider. He notes while you have to know where you can legally ride, you also need to keep your personal safety top of mind. He notes safety equipment can mean the difference between life and death if you're in an accident, and adds you'll also need to be aware of other traffic along your travels.

"If you happen to cross a road or somewhere you can be where there's regular traffic, remember that an ATV is a lot smaller than a vehicle, so make sure they see you."

Road safety has been a real focus across Manitoba this week, after four driving-related deaths in 24 hours, including two in the RM of Rockwood.
