A bridge in the RM of Portage la Prairie has collapsed, and assessments are currently taking place. Davey's Bridge, on Road 77 North between Roads 45 and 46 West, just east of Westbourne, was brought down yesterday afternoon, when a tractor and harrow bar were travelling over the structure. RM of Portage la Prairie Public Works Foreman Reg Shostal says it appears the tractor was able to make it over the bridge, but the harrow bar went down with the collapse. He says it's hard to say the exact reason for the incident, but explains they believe the bridge's age may have played a factor.

"I guess over time, we're trying to determine when the bridge was put in. The best guess we have is sixties or earlier. Apparently overtime it just let go."

Arline Davey who lives in the area says the bridge was likely built in the 1920s. While the exact cause has yet to be determined, Shostal says they're going to be conducting a wider-assessment to ensure the safety of those crossing the RM's Bridges.

"I think there are one or two more bridges in the RM, the rest are all culverts which we maintain and look at so they're in relatively good shape. With this happening, it will be in the forefront for us to be looking at the rest of them."

The municipality is currently working with Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship to assess the damage, and begin repairs. The stretch of road will remain closed until further notice.
