Portage-Lisgar MP Candice Bergen was just named House Leader of the Opposition yesterday. Bergen explains how recent events led up to the news of her new role .

"I was very honoured when Rona Ambrose our leader asked me to take this role on. She and I actually have been talking about it a number of weeks ago, because our current house leader at the time, Andrew Scheer, had been talking about running for leader. So, we knew that there could be a vacancy. And when I spoke to her I was really encouraging her to put somebody in who would be tough on the Liberals, and hold the Liberals to account. And I wasn't thinking of myself."

She explains why she accepted the position.

"It makes sense. I've been a parliamentarian for eight years; I've shepherded my own private members bill through the legislative process; I've sat on committees; I've been a cabinet minister. And I have a reputation in Ottawa for being tough; for being partisan; for being very vocal on my beliefs; but also I work well with other members. I was honoured and a little bit taken back. But then I thought, I can do this."

Bergen outlines her new responsibilities.

"The House Leader coordinates everything that goes on in the Chamber and works together with the Whip who coordinates what's going on in committees. So, that means that whatever legislation the government is bringing forward, what I will do is I will coordinate with our Opposition Critics to arrange for speakers, and to also talk about the position that we're going to take on specific bills."
